Staying in Education – What are the Options?

Whether your child is academically minded, more practical, or has a specific career in their sights, you’ll find a course to suit their needs here at Telford College.

It is now compulsory for all young people to stay in education or training until they are 18. 

A LEVELS - THE 6TH FORM

This is the most popular academic route, where good grades can be a stepping stone to university or well-paid careers. You don’t have to choose between academic achievement and career success, because our £2.5 million 6th Form centre offers the best of both worlds. A standard 6th Form will focus solely on getting students to university having passed their A levels, but we take a more holistic view of our students, and want to help them achieve for life, not just for the two years they are here. Students can choose from around 25 A level subjects, or select specific combinations for a particular career pathway.

TECHNICAL COURSES & BTEC

If there is a subject your son or daughter really enjoys, or a career they have their minds set on, a vocational course could be the perfect choice. On our vocational programmes, students will hone their employability skills in a certain trade or profession, get valuable work experience and involvement from employers, and still have the option to go on to university. They’ll learn in industry-standard training facilities with all the latest equipment and resources. Level 3 vocational programmes are equivalent to three A levels and are accepted by most UK universities.

T-Levels

T-Levels are 2-year courses equivalent to 3 A levels in UCAS points following on from GCSEs. They’ve been co-created by the industry you want to be a part of so you can gain the knowledge and skills you need to go into your desired career. If you have not already achieved grade 4 at GCSE for English and maths, you can attain these alongside a T-Level. You will undertake both a technical qualification and a minimum 315 hour (45 day) industry placement with a relevant employer.

APPRENTICESHIPS

Forget everything you might know about the old YTS schemes – today’s apprenticeships are no longer just a route to learning a trade. They offer dynamic learning in dozens of industries such as law, accounting, business, IT and more, with qualifications right up to degree level. It’s a chance to get straight into a career, earning a salary while also studying a qualification. You can study intermediate apprenticeships (equivalent to five GCSEs at grades 9-4), advanced apprenticeships (equivalent to A levels) or higher apprenticeships which incorporate university degree qualifications.
