Cyber security is now one of the most important sectors in the world, demanding a multi billion pound industry that is constantly expanding. With all individual’s and company’s data, details and records all stored online, the need to protect digital infrastructure is more important than ever.
Help build, maintain and analyse security systems as threats from the likes of malware, ransomware, phishing, DDoS attacks and hacking increase. Cyber Security Technologists all require an understanding of security concepts and technology and how to mitigate risks arising from threats. The specific tasks undertaken vary depending on what needs to be achieved by the team at any particular time. Some tasks may be very technical, others may be more analytical, business or user focused. All roles in this occupation work to achieve required cyber security outcomes in a legal and regulatory context in all parts of the economy. They develop and apply practical knowledge of information security to deliver solutions that fulfil an organisations requirement.
You will interact with a broad range of people from their own organisation and externally including suppliers and customers, technical specialists, nonspecialists, peers and senior representatives. The roles are typically office or computer room/lab based. An employee in this occupation will be responsible for their own work, work as part of a team including different levels of technical and non-technical skills, and may also be required to supervise work, budgets and other staff.

Cyber security specialist, network manager, IT technician, web developer, web designer, computer games developer or tester, pathways into higher education.
Entry requirements
GCSE English and maths at grade 4 or above, and employed in a suitable role for at least 30 hours a week. You will also be expected to sit an assessment for English, maths and multiple choice IT test, as well as attend an interview with our Apprenticeships team and Computing Apprenticeship Tutor(s).
Additional information
Apprentices attend college for one day per week (term time) and work towards passing the knowledge requirements of Infrastructure technician course. Completing 4 modules each assessed by an exam.
Telford College works with the employer to create a specific development plan to meet the apprenticeship standards which the apprentice is expected to work towards. Whilst working to the plan in the workplace the apprentice will track the journey mapping to the require standards showing valuable knowledge, skills and practical experience gained. Alongside an off the job record highlighting all the learning that has taken place (a min of 20% of the duration of the
apprenticeship). Apprentices are supported by a computing tutor whilst at college.
Assessment in the workplace and with regular reviews between the employer, tutor and apprentice to discuss
progress and achievements.
When the apprenticeship standard, knowledge requirements, portfolio, and off the job learning hours has been completed apprentices move to gateway. This is where the employer confirms competency and a project is set for the apprentice to complete ready for end point assessment.
A project report is created by the apprentices and submitted to the EPA for grading. Following the submission a discussion takes place to confirm competency and is graded.
