Telford and Wrekin primary school pupils tee off at Telford College’s sports dome

Golfway Festival

Telford College’s sports dome hosted a golf tournament for primary school pupils across the region for a fun day on the green.

The event, run by school games organisers Frankie Williams and Sally Harris of Energize Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, saw pupils aged 7-11 from 12 schools in Telford take part, with Telford College students on hand to help officiate.

Frankie Williams said: “We set up 10 stations that Telford College students operated, including two practice greens where students could get to grips with using the club and how far they can hit the ball. We had a bullseye challenge where students had to hit the target, as well as putting competitions.

“This event gave pupils a fun session away from school where they could enjoy themselves, test their skills and, for some of them, learn a new sport that they may want to take up in the future.”

Sally Harris said: “We’re really glad that we could have the sports students at Telford College help us out; we hope it will have boosted their confidence, leadership and the communication skills you need to work with younger children.

“They’ve been fantastic. They’ve really helped coach and motivate the pupils, displaying great proactivity. We hope this experience will have really geared them up for employment by the time their programme finishes.”
