Lucy is aiming for a career in education after completing her foundation degree

Lucy Poole, HE graduate

Former Telford College student Lucy Poole is excelling at university, where she is preparing to follow her dream of working in education.

Lucy is now in her final year of her top-up degree with the University of Wolverhampton and is keen to explore roles in teaching and safeguarding following completion of her current studies.

After previously working in a school environment, Lucy decided she wanted to progress her skills, enrolling to study a foundation degree in early years services at the college.

This programme gives students an excellent grounding in supporting children in early years, education (primary, secondary or special education) and the wider community, drawing on a wide variety of key topics that are pertinent to all roles within the sector.

“The foundation degree allowed me the opportunity to commit to something for myself whilst working and earning a salary” explains Lucy. “The knowledge I gained on the programme has been amazing and relevant to my future progression. I particularly enjoyed the safeguarding module and the young lives modules – both were applicable to my interests and responsibilities at work.”

As well as her studies, Lucy is pursuing a behaviour advisory and support role with her local authority and believes the foundation degree is the primary reason she is in the position she is.

My confidence is at an all-time high and that’s vastly due to my studies at Telford College. The knowledge I learnt whilst on the course I have been able to apply to my everyday practice. The support I had throughout the whole programme was brilliant and I would highly recommend the foundation degree to anyone thinking of doing something for themselves.”

Abi Allen, programme manager for access, HE and health at Telford College, said: “Lucy is a hard-working, ambitious student who is keen to upskill for her own professional development but also to expand the number of opportunities she can have career-wise”

“I feel extremely proud of all my students, especially when a student like Lucy is using all of their skills and knowledge to achieve the career they always wanted to.”

“Students can enquire about higher level study at Telford College to take the next steps towards their chosen careers or to upskill in the roles they have now.”
