About the course

The Introduction to Basic Electronics course is suitable for anyone who has never soldered or worked with electronic devices before. Applicants will learn about the basic techniques, tools and knowledge required to accurately solder, desolder and inspect PCBs.

Topics and units

Week 1

  • Apply safe working practices associated with the soldering process.
  • Understand the problems of electrostatic discharge (ESD)
  • Understand PCB terminology

Week 2

  • Identify various types of components used in basic electronics
  • Determine component values and orientation from case markings

Week 3

  • Select the correct grades of solder
  • Understand the hazards and use of fluxes and cleaning solvents

Week 4

  • Correctly solder through-hole components…plus simple wires for soldering
  • Correctly solder surface mount devices (SMD)

Week 5

  • Remove and replace solder joints and components on PCBs using: THT desoldering tools, solder wick, soldering irons, heated tweezers and hot air rework stations
  • Inspect PCBs we aware some industry standards.

Entry requirements

No prior experience or knowledge is required for this course, just an interest in electronics and a willingness to learn, as well as solid verbal and written communication skills.

Additional information

No equipment is necessary for the course. Safety glasses will be provided by the College.

Dates for this course run on Tuesday evenings, 6pm-9pm, from:

  • 05/11/24 – 03/12/24
  • 04/03/25 – 01/04/25
