A level student Jack is pursuing a career in mathematics after completing his studies

A level student Jack Hodnett

A level student Jack is progressing to Birmingham University after excelling in his maths, further maths and physics A levels.

Previously a pupil of William Brooks School in Much Wenlock, Jack was recommended the college from his brother, who had previously studied at the college and enjoyed his studies.

“I always knew in secondary school I was going to study something involving maths” says Jack. “It’s why I chose to study physics – as it applies a lot of maths in science.

“I like my maths tutors here at Telford College. They never shy away from challenging me and they’ll always give me something a level higher to help me progress my knowledge.

“I like how physics describes the processes of the universe. I like things to be more defined so I can understand what things are, how they do what they do, and why.

“I’m planning to go to go to university to study mathematics, I’m looking at going to Birmingham University. Eventually, I’d like to be a maths researcher. I want to discover and apply new forms of mathematics in the field, any jobs like that would be brilliant for me.”

Outside of college, Jack is an avid field hockey player. “I’m really looking forward to finding a new team. I prefer playing sports and getting involved, rather than watching it as a spectator.

Ed Young-Lidard, learner manager for maths at Telford College, said: “Jack is an exceptional student. He is highly motivated, hardworking, and passionate.

He has a fantastic ability to analyse and solve complex mathematical and logical problems. Jack is always reading around the subject and completing extension work, whether inside the classroom or in his own time.

He is a fantastic independent learner, usually at least a year ahead of the current classroom syllabus, and he always has a problem that he is solving.
