About the course

If you are passionate about science and want to progress to a successful career in the profession then the AAQ in Applied Science will provide you with a deeper understanding of scientific principles across the main areas of biology, chemistry and physics.

You will develop a range of scientific, practical and analytical skills including strengthening your research and investigative skills, improve your analytical, critical thinking and communication skills and utilise scientific techniques to conduct experiments. You will have the opportunity to work on projects and experiments in the practical working environment of our well-equipped science labs and go on science-related educational visits and field trips.

Topics and units

Principles and Applications of Biology – This unit will cover the structure and function of cells and tissues, biological molecules, enzymes and their role in organisms.

Principles and Applications of Chemistry – This unit will cover the structure of the Periodic Table and its implications on physical and chemical properties of substances, through analysis of different bonding methods.

Principles and Applications of Physics – This unit will cover waves and their applications; force principles and their application in transportation and construction of electrical circuits.

Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques – This unit will cover practical applications across the sciences, including chromatography, colorimetry and electrical circuits.

Scientific Investigation Skills – This unit will cover investigative research, including planning, data collection, analysis, and evaluation.

Careers and progression

Progressing to: Higher education Courses, Apprenticeship and employment.

Aspirational careers: Bio Chemist, Health Professional, Radiographer, Food Tester, Environmental Scientist

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grades 9-4, including English, Maths and Science.

Additional information

50% of your qualification is made up of external assessment. Principles of Biology, Chemistry and Physics are assessed by examination in either the January or June of the year of study. Practical Scientific Procedures and Scientific Investigation Skills are assessed internally with assignment briefs set by BTEC.

As part of the course, you will be completing a lot of practical work. Students will be required to purchase their own college lab coat.

Applied Science has to be studied in combination with two A Levels. Good combinations include, Criminology, Environmental Science, Geography, Geology, Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology.
