Mouthwatering menus revealed for new Orange Tree season

Telford College’s on-site restaurant is opening to the public again next month to serve up a series of themed lunches.

The Orange Tree, at the college’s Wellington campus, has just been given a five-star food hygiene rating from the local authority, and will be serving four special lunchtime menus from midday on February 3, 7, 10 and 14.

The dishes will be designed and prepared by the college’s catering students with support from experienced chef lecturers. The menus include Chinese, Italian and Valentine’s themes as well as a more traditional a la carte selection.

Diners will be able to choose from starters including Italian caprese salad, Chinese dim sum, and sharing camembert as starters, main courses such as crispy beef with sweet chilli, heart-shaped crab and prawn ravioli, and beef and ale pie, and desserts including chocolate and hazelnut parfait with Italian meringue, banana fritters with caramel sauce, and baked Alaska orange tree.

All the one-off menus are priced at £12.50 for two courses or £15 for three courses, with complimentary tea and coffee, and additional drinks available from a licensed bar.

The Orange Tree served well over 300 visitors last term in the run-up to Christmas, with lunches for the local community and several private events.

Andy Turner, head of vocational studies at the college, said: “We are delighted to have the restaurant back open again to the public in February. Many visitors for our Christmas lunches have been asking when they can come back and enjoy the high-quality food that our students produce.

“We are extremely grateful to all that come and dine with us at The Orange Tree, because they are not only enjoying a reasonably priced fine-dining experience, but also supporting our young people in their studies and contributing to their development as professional chefs.”

This month has already seen the return of the extremely popular ‘Orange Tree @Home’ evening takeaway service, where food produced by students as part of their assessments is sold exclusively for staff at Telford College. Any surplus is then donated to a local community groceries project.
