Written by employers within the automotive retail industry, this apprenticeship is suitable for aspiring technicians. You will learn to service and repair light vehicles, replace components, solve complex faults, use diagnostic methods and equipment, as well as gaining knowledge of a whole array of other skills.
Topics and units
Apprentices are supported by an automotive tutor whilst at college, with assessment in the workplace and regular reviews between the employer, tutor and apprentice to discuss progress and achievements.
When the apprenticeship standards and off the job learning hours have been completed, apprentices move to the final gateway. This is where the employer confirms competency and the End Point Assessment process begins.
This consists of 4 stages:
• Review of completed evidence within your eLogbook
• Knowledge Assessment. This takes the form of 2 online tests.
• Skills Assessment (Practical Tasks) You will be observed by an independent assessor completing 5 tasks designed by the IMI (Institute of the Motor Industry)
• In-depth professional review. This is a professional discussion carried out by an independent assessor.
Careers and progression
Many apprentices remain employed with the company and may further develop their skills by gaining M.O.T tester status or specialist hybrid and electric vehicle qualifications.
Entry requirements
Individual employers will set the selection criteria for the applicant. It is recommended during the selection process that the learner demonstrates the following qualities:
• Interested in motor vehicles
• General analytical and mechanical skills
• Research and problem solving skills
• Organised, methodical and good attention to detail
• Good communication skills, both oral and written
• Works as part of a team to deliver excellent service
Any apprentices who do not have English and Maths GCSE’s at grade C / grade 4 or Functional Skills L2 will be required to complete these as part of their apprenticeship.
In addition to this, all apprentices are required to obtain F-Gas qualifications in line with EU regulations involved with
working on vehicle air conditioning systems.
Additional information
It is expected that it will typically take three years for the apprentice to attain the required level of competence in the workplace, although it may be less if you already have
significant training and practical experience.
Apprentices attend college for 6 hours per week (term time) in order to facilitate the skills and knowledge required to progress through structured gateways before final End Point Assessment.
Telford College works with the employer to create a specific development plan to meet the apprenticeship standards. You will also be assigned a workplace Mentor who will assist with training and pass judgement on your progress. Whilst working towards standards, you will be required to track and show evidence of your progress by using an electronic logbook together with an off the job record highlighting all the learning that has taken place (a min of 20% of the duration of the apprenticeship).
