The introduction to the basic machining of metal course is suitable for anyone who is a novice machinist. Applicants will learn the basic techniques, settings and knowledge required to produce basic machined items. Applicants may then wish to progress onto a level 1 formal qualification.
Topics and units
Week 1 – Health and safety precautions, Setting up of Milling machines and Lathes, material and tool selection
Week 2 – Interpretation of drawings, setting up and producing basic profiles on a Lathe
Week 3 – Machining basic features on a Lathe
Week 4 – Interpretation of drawings, setting up and producing basic profiles on a Milling Machine
Week 5 – Machining basic features on a Milling Machine.
Entry requirements
No prior welding experience or knowledge is required for this course, just an interest in machining and a willingness to learn, as well as solid verbal and written communication skills.
Additional information
Applicants will require safety boots, overalls and safety glasses.
