About the course

Develop your understanding of contemporary environmental issues and investigate the impact of human activity on our planet. You should be keen to explore how we can create strategies for a sustainable lifestyle. This is a subject that helps you to develop professional research skills that will assist you in a range of future career pathways.

Environmental Science is an exciting course that can help change the world for the better. Enjoy exploring the contemporary environmental issues that face the world today, such as the sustainable use of resources. You should have an interest in learning about conservation.

 

Topics and units

  • The living environment during which you will cover: conditions for life on earth; conservation of biodiversity and life processes in the biosphere and conservation planning.
  • The physical environment during which you will cover: the atmosphere; the hydrosphere; mineral resources; biogeochemical cycles and soils.
  • Energy resources during which you will cover: the importance of energy supplies in the development of society; the impact of the features of energy resources on their use; the sustainability of current energy resource exploitation and strategies to secure future energy supplies.
  • Pollution during which you will cover: the properties of pollutants; how environmental features affect the severity of pollution; strategies to control pollutants based on their properties and features of the environment and the use of scientific knowledge to develop new pollution control technologies.
  • Biological resources during which you will cover: agriculture; aquatic food production systems and forest resources.
  • Sustainability during which you will cover: dynamic equilibria; energy, material cycles; and the circular economy.
  • Research Methods during which you will cover: scientific methodologies and sampling techniques.

Careers and progression

Higher education, apprenticeships and employment.

Aspirational careers:

Environmental consultant, environmental education officer, nature conservation officer, environmental engineer,  sustainability consultant, water quality scientist, environmental health practitioner, landscape architect, town planner and toxicologist.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grades 9-4, including English, Maths (at a minimum of grade 5) and Science (at a minimum of grade 55).

Additional information

This course is assessed by two external 3 hour examinations at the end of your second year of study. You will also complete 12 assessed practicals across the two years.

Some of the practical work you undertake will involve you working in the outdoors.
