This one-year course is the first step towards a career in the hair and beauty industry. You will learn the underlying principles and practical skills required for the industry by working in a real-life salon environment at The Retreat, our on-site salon with two highly equipped hair salons and three beauty salons, completing practical assessments on your peers, and potentially members of the public. You will be expected to complete written assignments and exams. Units include shampooing, and conditioning, consultation, styling, and dressing hair, plaiting, and twisting hair, temporary hair colour, basic manicure treatments, nail art, and head massage. You will study aspects of health and safety, working with others, personal presentation and customer care. Students also take part in hair competitions. You will need to purchase a uniform – these are required for all practical sessions adn assessments.

Work placement opportunities:
Salon or reception assistant at several local businesses
Careers and progression
Progressing to: Level 2 hairdressing or beauty therapy, receptionist, or junior stylist/therapist
Aspirational careers: Salon owner, beautician to film and TV stars
Entry requirements
4 GCSEs at grades 2-1 including English and/or maths
Additional information
Studnets will have opportunties to attend additioanl enrichment inclduing trips, visits and guest speakers. Studnets will be expected to work in the commerical salons and reception during salon days
All studennst will need to arrange and attend work experience – related to Hairdressing and/or Beauty Therapy.
