This qualification will develop your knowledge and awareness of the types of provision in the health, social care and children’s and young people’s sectors combining health and early years. The course covers the roles played by workers, including principles and values, health and safety, and working with others. You will learn essential transferable skills such as good communication, and develop a real understanding of the health and social care sector thanks to our links with local providers. The course includes understanding the principles and values in health & social care, service provision and roles, awareness of protection and safeguarding; and an introduction to communication. You can also take functional skills maths and English alongside this foundation level course, and if you complete it successfully, you can progress on to level 2 Health and Social Care or Childcare.

– Introduction to communication in health and social care, early years and childcare
– Introductory awareness of equality and inclusion in health, social care and children’s and young people’s settings
– Introductory awareness of health and safety in health, social care and children’s and young people’s settings
– Introductory awareness of person-centred support in health, social care and children’s and young people’s settings
– Introductory awareness of the importance of healthy eating and drinking for adults
– Human growth and development
– Understand the importance of engagement in leisure and social activities in health and social care
– Introduction to the physical care needs of babies and young children
– Introduction to mental health
– Introduction to dementia

Careers and progression
Progressing to: Level 2 studies in either health or early years, apprenticeships or junior health roles
Aspirational careers: Nursing, midwifery, paramedic, social worker, counsellor, psychologist, health care assistants and care/support workers.

4 GCSEs at grade 1-2
Additional information
You will need to have a DBS check (fully funded by the college) so please collate all the evidence needed prior to starting the course. Our aim is to provide all of our students with good social and personal skills in order to progress on to the next level of study. We work closely with local residential care homes and will send cards at festive periods and raise money for charity.
