Introduction to MIG Welding – Part time

About the course

This programme is designed for those that are novice welders, or have never welded before and provides the opportunity to gain the knowledge and techniques required to create a satisfactory weld using the MIG process.

Running from 4th June 2024, this FREE* programme runs for 5 consecutive Tuesday evenings between 18:00 and 21:00.

Topics and units

The programme runs 3 hours per week for 5 weeks and will cover the following topics:

Week 1 – Welding safety precautions, Setting up of MIG welding Equipment, Welding technique, practice of laying down a weld.

Week 2 – Identifying and correcting common weld defects, reading basic weld drawings , practice fillet weld on 6mm & 2mm thick steel

Week 3 – Completion of fillet weld to standard, learn techniques required for Butt weld in 2mm/6mm steel

Week 4 – Complete Butt weld to standard, learn techniques required for corner weld in 2mm/6mm steel

Week 5 – Completion of weld projects and observations of performance

Entry requirements

No previous qualifications needed, just an interest in welding and a willingness to learn, as well as solid verbal and written communication skills.

Additional information

The programme will allow you to practice on different thicknesses of low carbon steel to give you an insight into how the equipment and the weld reacts to different inputs from the user.

You may then wish to enrol on further weld programmes to develop your technique.
