About the course

The Level 1 Award in Photography is a part-time NCFE-accredited qualification that takes approximately 5 months to complete and has been developed in collaboration with industry specialists and established photography professionals. The qualification is supported by the Royal Photographic Society as a suitable programme for meeting the needs of learners and employers.

This course is aimed at individuals who have a passion for being creative and wish to develop their understanding of basic photographic, processes, techniques and equipment that underpin all photography careers, and be the first step on your path to future career success. There will be key elements that allow you to understand how to compose, take and manipulate an image.

You will learn how to use basic camera controls, working through a series of set project briefs, producing images accompanied by annotated works to meet the course criteria. You will have access to the departments industry standard equipment (both hardware and software) to achieve this and have final works selected to be exhibited in the departmental end of year show.

Careers and progression

Individuals can pursue progression into employment in the creative industries including photography, art and design, craft, animation and moving image production or look to continue their educational journey in the creative field and explore other educational pathways.

Entry requirements

No formal entry requirements are needed to obtain a place on this course however some evidence of ability and a keen willingness to engage with the subject.

Additional information

Students will be required to provide their own functioning DSLR Camera and Mobile Device.

The course is assessed through 100% course work/portfolio of work which will then be internally assessed by the lecturer after the submission deadline. Examples of student work will be externally selected and verified by an external moderator for quality assurance.
