About the course

This course builds on the knowledge and skills you will have developed on automotive level 1 courses. Your technical training will continue to help you acquire the essential knowledge you’ll need to become a service technician. You’ll be working on light vehicles and the course will cover the theory and practical aspects of routine vehicle maintenance, removal and replacement of engine units and components, electrical auxiliary units, and chassis units and components. The course includes vehicle fitting procedures; transmission systems; chassis systems; and electrical systems. You will experience the latest automated test lane for MOTs, a chassis dynamometer, engine testing and fault diagnostics, computerised four-wheel alignment and Snap-On tools and equipment.

Topics and units

Units:
– Skills in health, safety and good housekeeping in the automotive environment
– Skills in supporting job roles in the automotive environment
– Knowledge of materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices
– Light vehicle engine mechanical, lubrication and cooling system units and components
– Light vehicle fuel, ignition, air and exhaust system units and components
– Removing and replacing light vehicle chassis units and components
– Removing and replacing light vehicle transmission and driveline units and components
– Removing and replacing light vehicle electrical units and components
– Routine light vehicle maintenance

Careers and progression

Progressing to: Level 3 vehicle maintenance, specialist engine servicing or repair training

Entry requirements

GCSE grade 3 or above in maths and English
