About the role

We have a new exciting vacancy in our Foundation Department for a Specialist SEN Teacher to cover Maternity.

The purpose of this role is to:

  • Promote student achievements by setting realistic & challenging targets to extend their abilities, raise self-esteem and gain independence & work skills.
  • Deliver individualised learning programmes to students within Foundation Learning, ensuring they make excellent progress towards their intended long term outcomes as described in their EHCPs, as appropriate.
  • Deliver outstanding Foundation Learning provision to a wide range of students, through an exceptional student experience leading to positive achievement outcomes.
  • Undertake a range of administrative and development duties that contributes to improving standards and achievements and the student experience.
Key Responsibilities
  • Effectively implement the RARPA process to ensure that students with High Needs successfully participate in good quality and individually tailored learning programmes that lead to employment or independent living.
  • Liaise with therapists to ensure students receive specialist support including Speech and Language Therapy and Physiotherapy.
  • Deliver general teaching, tutorials, student assessments, curriculum development, 1:1 progress reviews, preparing materials and assignments, marking work and examinations, educational guidance, supervision of student visit programmes, marketing and administration.
  • Regularly evaluate and assess (formative and summative) the work of students in relation to the curriculum criteria and provide timely constructive and helpful student feedback to ensure they achieve their targets.
  • Carry out, collate and feedback initial and/or diagnostic assessments to identify students’ ILP and support as required, providing differentiated learning strategies to enable students to achieve their primary learning goal.
  • Participate in course development and delivery. This will include short term and long term curriculum planning and providing assignment and assessment material appropriate to each specific programme.
  • Implement specialist SEN training where appropriate, such as PECS, TEACCH, Makaton and Autism Awareness.
Skills, knowledge and expertise

Qualifications and training

  • Teaching qualification, e.g. Cert Ed, PGCE or DTLLs, or a firm commitment to achieve a Diploma in Education and Training (DET).
  • Level 2 qualification (GCSE A* – C, or equivalent) in maths and English or a willingness to attain these qualifications with the support of the College.
  • Specialist qualification in the teaching of students with learning difficulties. (Desirable)

Skills and expertise

  • Knowledge and experience of utilising a range of teaching methods to suit the diverse needs of individual learners; including multi-sensory approaches and student centred learning
  • Experience of working with learners with challenging behaviour
  • Knowledge of SEND curriculum developments
  • Ability to liaise with and develop relationships with employers, feeder schools and support agencies
