A level student Hewie set to follow his film-making dream at university

A level student Hewie Walmsley

A level student Hewie Walmsley is going to Birmingham University to study filmmaking, after getting three B grades in his studies.

Previously a student at Hadley Learning Community, Hewie studied A level media, criminology and photography at the college.

Hewie said: “I chose to study  media as I thought it was a cool, broad subject to learn with a lot of potential outcomes. I originally took art before choosing to focus on photography instead as it matched my skillset.”

“I thought that I needed a challenging, more traditional A level as well, so I chose to study criminology as I have a lot of interest in the field. I enjoyed the factual contrast in my criminology work, compared to my other more creative A levels.”

“I enjoyed expressing my creativity in media and photography; I particularly liked media as I got to understand the innerworkings of the film and TV industry a lot more than I already did.”

“Telford College has a great atmosphere, I got to make a lot of new friends whilst studying here. I think the buildings are really cool too.”

“I’m looking forward to starting my new studies in Birmingham, I’ve got the grades that I needed and I’m absolutely delighted. My dream job is to be a director in film and I’m on the right path.”

Hewie also volunteered to open his results live on the radio at our A level results breakfast – Listen here.

Robert Bennion, learner manager for A levels at Telford College and Hewie’s media lecturer, said: “Hewie is a perfect example of a student who’s made the most out of their second year, working as hard as he can and he’s really reaped the benefits of that extra effort.”

“He came into the second year with target grades lower than his standard, challenging himself to work harder and the grades he’s achieved are a fantastic outcome to him and his studies.”

“He’s really prepared himself with the skills necessary for university; he’s a creative independent worker, who takes feedback very well and I think he’s positioned himself to do very well at university.”

It’s not too late to apply for our A level courses, see our provision here.
