A level student Melody is determined to make waves in biomedical science

Melody Greive, A level student at Telford College

A level student Melody Grieve is preparing for a career in science after studying maths, biology and chemistry at Telford College.

The former Codsall High School student first heard about the college from another friend’s experience at an open event, deciding to book on to the next one to find out more.

“I really enjoy the freedom and open revision pattern that Telford College offers,” she says. “The lecturers give you the chance to revise and study as much as you want to, compared to the heavily structured way other sixth forms do.

“I love the logic behind maths, the fact I can come up with an answer and be able to explain my workings clearly. I can be in an exam and be able to check the working to make sure I’ve got the right answer, unlike an essay-based subject where I can leave an exam and be either right or wrong.

“Biology is my favourite subject. I think it contextualises everyday life; it’s everything we do and everything around us. It explains how we function, why are we alive and how do we feel things, I feel I can answer those questions now.

“I feel that chemistry is similar to both, as it also helps explain everyday life, why certain reactions happen, whilst relying heavily on maths.”

Melody’s hobby outside college is science too. Whether it’s reading, watching lecturers or guest speakers, she says she loves finding new things to learn.

“I love how I can come in on my days off and use the revision space to help study. I’ve been here so late before, whilst revising, that I’m the only person here and nobody can stop me!”

After leaving Telford College, Melody wants to do an integrated master’s degree in biomedical science at Warwick University. “I haven’t decided whether I want to specialise in immunology or genetics, but my dream job is to work in a research lab, trying to find the next big breakthrough in curing diseases.”

Ed Young-Lidard, learner manager for maths at Telford College, said: “Melody is a highly motivated, hardworking, and passionate student who has a fantastic ability to analysis and solve complex mathematical and logical problems.

“Melody is a great independent learner, highly resilient and will ensure that every potential barrier will be overcome. She completes homework to a timely and exceptional standard.

“She is friendly, inquisitive, and highly supportive of her peers I have no doubt that Melody will be an exceptional student and would highly recommend her for a medical degree. Her enthusiasm, independence, academic talent, and self-motivation will ensure that she succeeds.”
