It’s never too late for a career change – that’s the message from a Telford College accountancy student who says he has relished his return to education.
Jonathan Taylor, from Telford, came to college because he wanted to gain a better financial education, and has gone from strength to strength.
After starting on a part-time level two AAT accounting adult course, he has now moved onto a level four AAT apprenticeship with a local company.
Jonathan, 36, said: “I began the accounting course because I find the structure and balance of accounting fascinating.
“When looking at job and business prospects, accounting had the most options and opportunities after studying.
“I wanted a better understanding of finance in general as I lacked a general financial education growing up – better late than never to learn!”
Jonathan, who previously studied in Bilston and Codsall, said it has been the sense of achievement he has enjoyed most about his Telford College studies.
“It’s all been great and really beneficial. I’ve really enjoyed the challenge of learning something completely new.
“The teaching support has been excellent. I lacked the maturity to appreciate brilliant teaching at school, so it has been a real eye-opener coming back to college.”
He added: “I’d really recommend studying accounting at Telford College. It’s never too late for a career change, and these courses give you a really solid start to a career.
“This course has brought balance to my life. You’ll need an interest in accounting to find the course interesting but getting to look at the bigger picture and all areas of finance has been really fascinating.
“There is such a broad spectrum of jobs and career opportunities in this sector.”
For his next step, Jonathan is hoping to secure his Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA) qualification once his apprenticeship studies are complete.
