Telford College’s human resources advisor, Sarah Corns, discussed her role at Telford College and how upskilling with a level five course in human resources helped her perfect her craft.
Initially a graduate of business studies at Derby University, Sarah worked at a management position in retail when she realised human resources (HR) was her true calling.
“I had the practical experience in HR.” says Sarah. “It helped me get my position here, however I really wanted the qualification to back up that experience. “I wanted to understand the theory behind the policies and procedures we adopt here.”
“We learn specifically about the practicality of HR, ethics, legislation, motivation and all aspects of HR. We look at the employee lifestyle all the way to recruitment to retirement and anything that could involve HR.”
“I think the course really helped back up the theories, putting confidence in doing the things we do. I learnt so much about people’s beliefs, equality and diversity, allowing us to put ourselves in other people’s shoes whilst staying compliant and following legislation.”
“I really enjoyed graduation; it was fantastic. It was great seeing all my peers again, I’ve made friends for life on this course and we all stay in contact. I still see my tutor Ann, who’s been brilliant and I really enjoy touching base with her.”
“It was nice donning the cap and gown again, we had such nice weather for graduation, and it was nice to celebrate my achievements with my parents there too.”

Ann Dollaghan, CIPD Lecturer at Telford College, said: “Sarah was a keen learner and took a lot from the course that she could transfer into her HR department.
“She was able to contribute to class discussion as she worked in the HR setting within her organisation. This qualification not only consolidates her current HR role but gave her knowledge and skills to allow her to progress in her career.
“The associate diploma in people management is perfect for you if you enjoy developing and managing people. You’ll study units such as organisational performance and culture in practice, employment relationship management and talent management and workforce planning.”
