After completing his engineering technician apprenticeship in mechatronics, Matt Riddell took up the full-time position of hardware design engineer at iconsys.
Formerly a pupil of Ercall Wood Academy, Wellington, Matt chose to study an apprenticeship after studying sport and taking part in the college’s sports academy.
Based in Stafford Park, Telford, iconsys is one of the leading automation solution providers in the UK. Founded in 1987, it has projects spanning across the world.
“My apprenticeship gave me a really good start within the company,” says Matt. “It taught me how to hit my deadlines properly and other skills, ultimately improving my general outlook and work ethic.
“During my apprenticeship, I really enjoyed the hands-on work in the workshop, as it gave me a really good grounding and understanding of the company.
“I chose to work in this role as it gives me a lot more responsibility within the company, I really enjoy the creative aspect this position brings.
“I’ve also made lots of friends here at iconsys, I get on with everybody really well and I really see a future here at the company.
“If I could give any advice to anyone considering being an apprentice, it would be to just get in there and get started, it’s amazing to earn while you learn and sets you up for a positive start to your career”
Milissa Chesters, head of people and culture at iconsys, says: “Matt was very quiet when he joined the company, but we could see from day one that he had potential.
“After completing his apprenticeship, Matt could have chosen more than one path at iconsys. There was an opportunity for him in hardware design, which has proven to be the right decision for him. He is a brand ambassador of iconsys. He’s very diligent, hard-working, responsible and can be relied on to get the job done.
“He is always keen to take the time to show new starters, apprentices and work experience students around the hardware design function. He’s a real team player.
“Matt is keen to continue to develop his skills in hardware design. He is growing in confidence, and we know he will have a successful career at iconsys.”
