HGV drivers are on the road to successful careers

four HGVs edited

Telford College has helped dozens of people to boost their skills for a career in the HGV sector over the past year.

The college works with employers and training providers across the West Midlands to deliver free short courses helping jobseekers redevelop their careers, enter a new industry, and reignite their future.

It is part of the college’s employability programme, working in partnership with Jobcentre Plus and a variety of businesses to generate new opportunities for the unemployed.

The college currently runs programmes in Telford, Wolverhampton, West Bromwich, Dudley, Birmingham, Redditch, Worcester and Hereford.

Latest success stories include a quartet from PR Training in the Black Country – a specialist training and development provider for the logistics, transport, supply chain, business and industry sectors.

Navinder Singh Uppal completed the HGV Logistics programme and secured a pass in the final last test of 2024. He is now studying further modules this month in CPC Transport Management.

Dillon Finnegan from Site Clear Solutions has used the course to upskill from his car to Class 2 licence following a five-day training course. Tutors praised him for his ‘hard work, commitment and determination to succeed’.

Jordan Ebanks has also passed his Class 2 test, with what PR Training described as ‘a fantastic test performance’, paving the way for him to start a new career in the logistics sector.

And Nathan Cheesbrough of Construct-IT has upskilled from his Class 2 to Class 1 licence following his time on the five-day training course.

The HGV programme is one of a series of initiatives set up by Telford College to help employers plug skills gaps.

It has also partnered with National Express West Midlands to run a three-week training programme designed to encourage more people to become bus drivers.

And the college held a logistics fair at its Wellington campus, bringing together a range of employers to showcase job and training opportunities.
