Hi, my name’s Megan and I’m in my third year at Telford College, a place I never imagined I’d feel so at home in. It has been quite the journey, full of challenges, triumphs, and personal growth. My path through education has been unconventional, but it has shaped me into who I am today.
I was home educated for most of my life, and learning in this way wasn’t always easy for me. I struggled to stay focused on work that didn’t involve physical activity, which often frustrated my poor mother.
Whether it was building cabins, working on boats, or fixing things around the house, I was in my element. I loved working with my hands, and it was during those moments that I discovered my passion for construction.
Being a young carer for my mother, taught me a lot about responsibility and resilience from an early age. These experiences influenced me and gave me a deep appreciation for hard work.
Starting college was a big step for me. I was terrified on my first day. My confidence was at zero, and social situations were tough to navigate, especially with new people. I wasn’t used to being around so many people, after spending so much time learning at home; and it felt overwhelming. I remember sitting in the classroom, feeling like a small fish in a huge pond.
But I wasn’t alone. My tutors and my family played a huge role in helping me adjust to this new chapter in my life. Their support meant everything to me, and slowly but surely, I began to adapt. I started my college journey with the construction level 1 course, and despite my initial nervousness, something clicked. The hands-on work gave me a sense of purpose and excitement.
By the end of my first year, I had achieved something I never expected – I won the Student of the Year award for both construction and maths! It was a surreal moment, one that boosted my confidence and confirmed I was on the right path.
I enrolled in the property maintenance Level 2 course and slowly came out of my shell. I was getting more comfortable with college life, and the friendships I started to form were really important to me.
My efforts were recognized again when I was nominated for a High Sheriff’s Award—an honour that felt incredible, considering how much I’d grown since that terrified first day. The nomination gave me another layer of confidence, motivating me to push further both academically and socially.
Now, in my third year, I’ve decided to pursue Bricklaying Level 1. While my long-term goal is to build a career in Property Maintenance, I’ve always enjoyed the hands-on nature of bricklaying. This year, I wanted to expand my skills further in an area that fascinates me.
Bricklaying is both challenging and rewarding, requiring a balance of precision and creativity, and I find it incredibly satisfying. By diversifying my skillset, I’m preparing myself for a career in property maintenance, but with a strong foundation in bricklaying as well.
I’ve been fortunate to have some amazing tutors along the way. They’ve supported me not only in learning the technical skills I need but also in growing as a person. I can’t thank them enough for their encouragement and belief in me. Their guidance has taught me that no matter what you’re doing, you should always put in the effort and do your best. This is a principle I live by.
There are still challenges ahead, both in my personal life as a young carer and in my professional journey. But with the skills I’ve gained, the support I have, and the determination to keep growing, I’m excited about what the future holds.
