Public uniformed services students Brooklyn Evans and Harry Johnson are beginning their training to start their dream careers in the Royal Marines.

Brooklyn and Harry, formerly of Aldersley High School and Codsall High School respectively, decided to apply for The Royal Marines together after being visited by a guest speaker from the force.

“I originally looked at other colleges in Wolverhampton, however I was really impressed by the standard of the course at Telford College” says Brooklyn. “I visited the college at an Open Event and I really enjoyed speaking to staff.”

“I love the active nature of the course; we do a lot of training and practice discipline. I liked finding out about all the opportunities available in the military.”

“I enjoyed the study schedule; we had block days which made it easier to travel and I could focus on my personal training.”

“We had loads of representatives from each service visit us, the Royal Marines really spoke to me. I applied as soon as I started my second year to give me a goal to aim towards.”

“My end goal in the marines is to be a physical training instructor (PTI), but I’m open to do anything, whatever the service has to offer.”

The public uniformed services course at Telford College prepares students for potential employment in one of the forces, promoting communication, self-confidence and leadership skills.

The course includes units such as theory-based work, drill and physical training, as well the opportunity to volunteer at external events, team-building exercises and placement opportunities.

“I always wanted to work in the services, I wanted to be part of something more, something bigger than myself” says Harry.

“I really enjoyed learning about the history of the forces on my course. I originally wanted to join the RAF, however I was inspired by a talk from the Marines. They really piqued my interest, they said about pushing myself to be the best that I can.”

“Me and Brooklyn looked at each other and we knew we should apply, then we decided to push ourselves with help from our lecturers.

“I want to be part of the 42 Commando unit. They’re a unit that intercepts boats and other maritime threats, spending a lot of time on the seas and training, it’s possibly the most intense role in the marines.

“If you have a dream or a goal, I believe you should always push yourself and work as hard as you can, if you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything.”

Craig Stockman, Harry & Brooklyn’s public uniformed services lecturer, said: “They were both determined & focused individuals, who’ve really developed and matured as young men over the last two years with us.

“The course has helped them take on board what they needed for the selection process and what they needed fitness wise. We wish them the best of luck in their recruitment training and we hope they go on to have great careers.”
