We spoke to Nia Rigby, a Functional Skills level 2 student who completed her course in the last academic year, to ask her about her time in the college and ask her what she’s up to now.
Nia has worked in healthcare all her life, “I started working at the Princess Royal Hospital 21 years ago, as a health care assistant” explains Nia. “I then spent 15 years working in maternity and recently got a new job as an Alcohol Practitioner.”
“I first went to Telford College around 2006 for a counselling course. I found this most interesting as you learn so much about yourself. I also met some lovely people in the group which I have also stayed in contact with.”
Nia was then involved in a 2-day course in her workplace as part of the college’s Multiply scheme, run in partnership with The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford and Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, which helped develop her maths to support with her work.
After this had finished, Nia then signed up to an intensive course to work towards Functional Skills maths at level 2.
“I attended the college for the second time to study Functional Skills maths at a higher level than what I had previously achieved. My tutor, Ben, was very patient with my way of learning, as well as the rest of my NHS colleagues who were also on the course.
“Having maths as a GCSE grade C, 4 or functional skills pass, can open so many doors for you in any career.
“Telford College is a fun place to learn, amazing tutors, friendly reception staff and the people that you meet on the course are all in the same mindset, to learn and achieve.”
We also spoke to Ben Hughes, who ran the previous Multiply programme and taught Nia in her Functional Skills lessons.
“Nia was a fantastic student who was hard working and put everything into developing her maths skills.
“She diligently worked through the course, developing her confidence and belief in herself through her time here at Telford College. Due to this dedication, she achieved her Functional Skills maths Level 2.”
