By Lawrence Wood, Telford College principal and chief executive
I am incredibly proud to have taken over as principal and chief executive at Telford College, at the start of what promises to be a very exciting year.
Education has the power to transform lives, and I’m looking forward to working in partnership with the community, employers and the local authority to support the growth and development of the town – giving people the strongest possible foundations for success.
This month sees the opening of our new Digital & Maths Skills Hub in Telford’s new Station Quarter. With a focus on innovation, it will be providing skills for some of the fastest growing and best-paid business sectors.
We have also invested around £2 million this summer to develop our Haybridge campus in Wellington, providing enhanced facilities in key subject areas like engineering and health.
I am strongly of the view that the college has an important role to play in supporting local and regional employers to develop and grow; from large multi-nationals to sole traders, we must listen to employers and support their needs. We have to work together to support people to become skilled employees.
We’re delighted with the exam results our students have achieved over the past few weeks. Our first T-Level results included a 100% pass rate for both our digital students, and our health students from their industry placement projects with the NHS. Our vocational students also achieved excellent results.
Our continued focus on developing our 6th Form provision has seen a significant increase in the number of students joining to study A levels this month. This means we can offer more subjects and continue to invest to ensure students have the best possible learning experience.
Learning doesn’t just take place in the classroom, of course. Happy students are productive students, and we put a great deal of effort into creating the right atmosphere around campus, including an extensive enrichment programme.
The best way to get a real flavour of college life is to attend one of our open events, when you can tour the facilities, and speak to staff and current students. The next event is on October 9 – all the registration details are on our website.
