Pupils step up to the crease in Shropshire Cricket tournament

Students playing cricket

The Shropshire Cricket Board are running tournaments for secondary school cricket teams over the next four weeks on campus, as they qualify for county and regional tournaments.

Four schools braved the year’s coldest temperatures to travel and compete in our 3G sports dome, which had been divided into separate pitches, as the girls under-13 age groups competed to be the Telford and Wrekin representatives for the county final. The winners of that tournament will represent Shropshire at the regional final at Edgbaston.

The following weeks bring the girls under-15, boys under-13 and under-15 groups to compete in the sports dome as they step up to the crease to become Telford and Wrekin champions.

The schools competing were Telford Priory School, Charlton School, Ercall Wood School, and Burton Borough School, with the latter emerging as the victors.

Darrell Corfield, Pathway Lead, Schools Competition Lead & Club Developer for Cricket Shropshire said “As part of my role at Cricket Shropshire, I put together and run these schools’ events. Burton Borough, who remained unbeaten during this entire morning, will now go through to the county finals in March where the winners of that will represent Shropshire in April at Edgbaston for regional finals.

“The tournament was a success with the main aim providing girls opportunities to play cricket. Part of that success was the positive way the Telford College leaders showed a great willingness to help and the students volunteering were a great help.”

Our students were on hand to help officiate and really enjoyed helping the students. James Wagstaff, joined by Tali Lort, Benjamin Pritchard, and Maddie Allen, spoke to us about his experience.

“We’ve split up into two teams to cover every game happening. I really want to train to be a PE teacher when I leave Telford College, the experience I’ve had today I feel has been useful to helping me achieve that.”
