Telford College’s sport and public uniformed services department has been exceptionally busy since the start of the new academic year with voluntary activities, exciting talks and the launch of a brand-new sports academy.
First year sports students kicked off their studies with a team bonding walk up the Wrekin, allowing them to experience low level exercise for the health and fitness for wellbeing unit.
Sports students also attended the Shropshire PE Conference at Shrewsbury Town Football Club, where they had the chance to network with members of the local sports industry, took part in workshops and even met legendary ski jumper Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards.
Students also hosted a Sportshall athletics event over several days, with primary schools across the region descending on the sports hall to compete against each other. The event saw Telford College students running and marshalling the games, improving their communication and organisational skills.
Female students have attended This Girl Can event at Lilleshall National Sports Centre. The scheme, founded in 2015 and funded by The National Lottery, aims to encourage more women to get active and get involved in various sports and workshops
Meanwhile, public uniformed services students have been volunteering at the Dawley Dinner scheme, where residents can get together for a hot meal every Friday. Students serve dinners, run activities and help to clear up, to keep this vital initiative running.

The department wants to thank public uniformed services students Charlie Hill and Reece Steadman for their exceptional work, after volunteering to run drill sessions at the college’s ‘twilight tasters’ event, teaching the students of tomorrow essential drill manoeuvres.
Talks from the Police, Army, Navy and the Royal Marines have helped our public uniformed services students choosing their future career paths, allowing them to explore what each service has to offer and what they need to achieve their dream career.
Meanwhile, sports students have welcomed guest speakers from Keele University and the Shropshire FA to help them decide whether to pursue work or an academic route when they leave the college.
Sports Academy
It’s an exciting era for students at Telford College, as the new Sports Academy takes shape with almost 100 students signed up across the college’s football, basketball and volleyball programmes.
The boys’ football team maintain a 100% win record going into November, whilst the basketball side lost their inaugural game to Holly Lodge High School, following it up with a win against Joseph Chamberlin Sixth Form college and setting strong foundations to build on for the future.
All of Telford College’s Sports Academy’s sides are in action after the half term break, with fixtures coming thick and fast as they strive to be a competitive fixture for other colleges and beyond.
Melanie Newbrook, learner manager for sport and public services at Telford College, said: “We’re so proud of our departments’ achievements this half term. Our team have been able to offer our students amazing opportunities to help them in their future career choices.
“Each of the events and guest speakers have offered the students an enriched experience which will allow their skills and behaviours to develop. This puts much of the theory into practice and enhances their understanding.
“Volunteering gives students a chance to talk to new people, see what activities communities put on, and the importance of community-based activities. It adds to their employability skills, which is excellent to put on their CVs and personal statements when applying for job roles.
“Some students have found assurance in the forces that they want to pursue careers with, where other have changed their minds to a different force or a different career in the forces following talks from the guest speakers. This is valuable in helping our students have the knowledge to choose the right career for them.”
