A nationally recognised qualification for adults aged 19+ who want to pursue a science-related degree but don’t currently meet the entry requirements. It’s ideal for those returning to education, changing career paths, or seeking a fresh start, and provides a solid foundation in key scientific disciplines such as biology, chemistry, and physics. You’ll gain both theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory experience.

Biology units: Human Cell Biology, Nutrition and Digestion, The Human Skeletal and Muscular Systems, Reproduction, Respiration and Circulation. Physics units: Medical Physics, Optics and Sounds, Radioactivity. Chemistry Units: Atomic Structure and Bonding, Periodic Table, Hydrocarbons, Practical Organic Chemistry, Chemical Change, Practical Scientific Project. Related Studies and Study Skill units: Academic Study Techniques, Progressing to Higher Education, Presentation Skills, Maths – Handling Data and Statistics.
The Access to HE Science course with a health focus offers a clear progression route into a range of university degrees and careers within the healthcare and medical science sectors. Learners often go on to study subjects such as:

Biomedical Science

Pharmacology

Radiography (Diagnostic or Therapeutic)

Physiotherapy

Occupational Therapy

Dentistry or Dental Hygiene

Optometry

Nursing or Midwifery (science-based routes)

Medical Laboratory Science

These degrees lead to professional roles within the NHS, private healthcare, research institutions, and public health organisations. Graduates may work in areas such as diagnostic testing, drug development, patient rehabilitation, or clinical research — all vital to the delivery of modern healthcare.

This course is ideal for learners who are passionate about science and want to apply their knowledge to improving health, treating disease, and supporting patient care.
3–5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including maths and English. Routes are available if you need to attain GCSE maths/English
Most units are assessed through written work such as written assignments and reports, including some essays. Some units are assessed via an exam, a practical demonstration or through presentations.
Work experience is encouraged alongside studies to support and enhance your university application. The course includes a range of offsite visits to local universities and guest speaker talks from UCAS, University professionals and Alumni.
