LAWRENCE WOOD
Principal and Chief Executive

Welcome to Telford College. If you are reading this, then you are likely thinking about next steps whether for yourself or your business. Our offer to you is straightforward: our mission is to deliver high-quality education and training, underpinned by our values of ambition, respect, and connection.

One of our key strategic aims is to inspire our students to achieve their potential and more. That applies to our offer for full-time students, for apprentices, and for those studying part-time.

Our students are at the heart of everything we do, and they impress me every day. They come to us with ambition and energy, full of personality and ideas, and it is a privilege to watch them grow in confidence and capability during their time here. Supporting them to succeed and to become the people they want to be is the most rewarding part of what we do.

Qualifications matter, they demonstrate that an individual is technically or academically competent to a particular level. But we also focus on developing other skills, like teamwork and communication. Every full-time student has the opportunity, through projects and enrichment activities, to gain valuable life and work skills alongside real experiences. This includes work experience and placements with local employers who are keen to support the development of future talent.

Our curriculum and its content are carefully designed to line up with the skills that employers in the region need. Working in partnership with hundreds of employers, we ensure that the skills people learn stay current, reflecting the latest developments across the full range of sectors. We also have a dedicated department focused specifically on ensuring the college is responsive, flexible, and ready to meet demand.

Telford College is undergoing a significant period of investment. We are investing in new equipment, so that every subject in every facility has high-quality, industry-standard resources. Our biggest investment to date has gone into Telford 6th, our new sixth form centre in Telford, and our new library at the Wellington campus.

Over the next two years, we will invest further still. Thanks to government support, an additional £4.7m will be spent on driving growth in key areas such as advanced manufacturing, digital, and automation, alongside a further £5m of college investment in other priority sectors.

The college could not function without our staff team, a group of dedicated people with high levels of expertise and experience. Over the past two years we have become a real living wage employer, increased pay scales for lecturers, and raised overall pay for all staff by 7%. We are also investing high-quality professional development, for example, we held a conference focused on teaching and learning in the summer with keynote speakers and workshops with topics like AI and inclusion.

I hope this gives you a sense of the college, of the opportunities available and how hard we will work to support your future success.

It is our job to ensure students have the best possible experience at college, and to do all we can to support you to achieve during your time with us.

Our students impress me greatly . . . dedicated to their studies, full of personality and ambitious for their futures.

Our staff are highly experienced and experts in their fields, committed to doing all they can to support students to achieve.

As Telford & Wrekin’s only further education college, we play an important role in supporting our local communities to thrive.

We are setting people up with the skills they need – not just technical skills, but soft skills around communication and teamwork too.

These soft skills are just as important for the development of a workforce. I hear this loud and clear from many Shropshire employers.

Our partnerships with employers play an important part in the way we design and deliver the curriculum, backed up by significant investment in resources and facilities, including the development of new campuses in Telford’s Station Quarter to add to our base in Wellington.

The college is a mature environment, more like university than school, but we do have high expectations in terms of attendance, homework and being committed to your college course.

We are committed to supporting students to achieve excellent examination results, as well as developing those broader skills that our industry partners tell us they value so highly.

Coming to college is an excellent step before university or employment and we work hard to support you to have a successful onward journey when you leave college.

Our work with adult learners continues to go from strength to strength too. Many people come to us to upskill or retrain, to get back into employment. It’s never too late to learn a new skill in this fast-moving world.

It is important to find the right course for you, and we have the widest range of choice in the area. From A levels and Apprenticeships to T-Levels, university-level modules, and a wide range of vocational programmes, there has never been a wider choice.

Our open events provide you with an opportunity to meet with and speak to subject staff, get a feel for the college, and prepare for this exciting next step.
