Drama and Theatre Studies is aimed at those wanting to develop their performance skills, and explore design-based roles within the world of theatre. It encourages students to break down theatre and storytelling, as well as to  explore types of theatre which they may never have experienced before. You need an interest in developing skills in performing, directing, designing, group collaboration, analysis and evaluation.

You will explore different styles and practitioners of theatre through workshops and teacher led sessions. These include –

Konstantin Stanislavski

Bertolt Brecht

Antonin Artaud

Steven Berkoff

Forced Entertainment

Frantic Assembly

This knowledge will then be used alongside an extract of an existing text. In groups, you will then work to devise a new piece of theatre. This will be recorded and internally assessed and externally moderated alongside supportive written work. You are able to perform or offer a design route (costume design, sound design)



Text in Performance

You will be directed by your teacher in the group rehearsal and performance of an extract of a performance text. This will be selected by your teacher. You are able to perform or offer a design route (costume design, sound design)

You will then be work with your teacher to develop a monologue or duologue performance. You are able to perform or offer a design route (costume design, sound design). These will be externally assessed either be recording or visiting external .



Theatre Makers in Practice

You will be prepared to sit a written exam in which you will be asked to complete:

Section A – Live Theatre Evaluation

We will see as much live theatre as we can over the course of the qualification, and as a group prepare one for examination.

Section B – We will study a text from the perspective of a performer/ designer, considering how you would bring it to life. You will be asked two extended response questions based on an unseen extract of this text.

Section C – Interpreting a Performance Text – We will study a different text from the perspective of a director, considering how you would re-imagine it for a contemporary audience. You will be asked one extended response questions based on an unseen extract of this text.

Progressing to: University courses in theatre, film, acting or performing arts. A variety of careers such as actor, director, writer, theatre manager or producer.
5 GCSEs at grades 9-4, including English Language and Maths. If you have studied Drama at GCSE, a grade 5 would be expected.
Exam and Practical Coursework
Trips will include visits to local and regional theatres to watch a range of performances.
