D’sharn makes his mark behind the camera

A Telford College student has his sights set on a career in sports photography after building an impressive portfolio during the first year of his A level course.

D’sharn Brown-Mccatty, a former Madeley Academy student, has just completed his first year studying A levels in photography, economics and computer science.

The 17-year-old, from Woodside, will be among the first students through the doors of the college’s new Telford 6th campus in the town’s Station Quarter in September where he will complete the second year of his course.

“I’ve always been into photography, and getting the chance to use the college’s camera equipment as part of my course has been excellent,” he said.

“I’m looking to go on to university to study sports photography, and would really like to be covering Premier League football clubs one day.”

The course has given D’sharn the chance to experiment with a wide range of photography skills, from compositions to floral shots, and lots of sport.

He has also been following Telford College’s all-conquering football team for the past season, witnessing them complete an ESFA league and cup double.

The journey included a day at the cup final at Shrewsbury Town FC’s Croud Meadow, and a trip to Wembley to see the team lift the league title.

He has also been photographing other local clubs in his own time, including Shifnal Town, Chasetown, and some local Sunday league clubs.

“I’m a season ticket holder at AFC Telford United, and I’ve applied for a volunteer spot to do some photography with them next season,” he said.

D’sharn said he chose Telford College because it was close to home, and offered some ‘really good courses’ which he was interested in.

“I’d say it’s been even better than I thought. The teachers are really sound, it’s a nice campus, and the move to Telford 6th in September will make it even better for me – new facilities, and easier for me to reach.”

His message to other students thinking of following in his footsteps is: “Put yourself out there, and make sure you go and talk to people to find out about all the opportunities there are at the college. That’s how I got the chance to do the college football team pictures, which has been a fantastic experience for me.”
