Companies, clubs and community spirit shine at Telford College’s Fresher’s Fayre

BeSafe Manager Caroline Welson speaks to a student at Telford College Freshers Fayre

Telford College proudly welcomed over 1,500 students to it’s annual Freshers’ Fayre, where they had the chance to browse and meet universities, local services and employers.

More than 50 exhibitors attended, including globally recognised companies such as the Rotary Club, Müller and Coca Cola, as well as Shropshire-based business such as Greenhous, Avara Foods and many more.

Meanwhile, Keele University, Harper Adams University, Aston University, University College Birmingham and the University of Staffordshire gave students an exciting flavour of the progression opportunities at the end of their studies.

They were also joined by staff from the college, promoting student services, careers, higher education and the apprenticeships team.

Melissa Whitrick, school liaison officer at Telford College, said: “We have had another fantastic Freshers’ Fayre – our students experienced all the wonderful opportunities our local area offers.

“Telford College plays an integral part in developing the futures of our young people and we are incredibly fortunate to have so many companies giving their time and expertise to help students on this journey. What a fabulous start to the academic year!”

Sharon Wyatt, who attended the event with her catering company Nanny Browns, said: “We’ve had a great day here; we’ve had so much positive feedback from students. We’re based just around the corner from the college, and we’ve learnt so much about what sort of things they look for in their lunch and how we can adapt our menu for them. We hope to see some of the students we’ve spoken to again in the future.”

The Wellington Branch of the Rotary club were also in attendance, where Sharon holds the title of youth lead. “The Rotary Club of Wellington looks after our little community here in Wellington. We do a lot of fundraising in the local area and, with the college and students, we offer a bursary award where they can apply to get a substantial grant towards something they need to help progress their studies.”

Ellie Campbell, student recruitment and access officer at Keele University, said: “We’re here today to speak to all of the new students at Telford College, getting them to think about their next steps in their education journey, whether that’s adult learning, university or further education.

“It’s been fantastic. We’ve spoken to lots of keen and eager students ready to talk about their destinations going forward. We’ve had chance to speak about some of the newer courses we’re planning to launch for 2026 too, so watch this space!”

Chris Field, employer relationship manager at the college, was on hand to give advice for those looking at apprenticeships. “Progression is a really important part of college life,” he said.

“Students will start their learning journey through further education and we’re here to help transition them to placements into the sectors they want to work in.

“It’s so important students can find out what careers are available to them, and we work with a lot of supportive employers who are here today. They want to build their presence and find the next generation of staff, which means making these introductions are key to both the employers and students.”
