I have been a registered adult nurse for 18 years, specialising in emergency and pre-hospital medicine. My clinical background is varied…
Having trained as a nurse in the Army, I started my clinical journey in trauma and orthopaedics, moving into A&E and pre-hospital care where I have worked for the last 16 years. I am very proud of my military service which has allowed me to work within a deployed field hospital and on the front line delivering pre-hospital medicine to all that needed it. Whilst working in the military I began to teach clinical skills using simulation-based training to enhance the experience of the learners and really found this to be my passion. I have developed and delivered several bespoke training packages, training all levels of clinical staff from doctors to front line medics. On leaving the military I continued with health education delivering specialist training to Staffordshire Police force, Bolton University pre-registration nurses and the RAF search and rescue teams. As a clinical educator working at Telford College, I have a unique opportunity to help nurture and grow the future workforce for the NHS. We have bespoke clinical ward areas with modern kit and equipment in which students learn and practice their clinical skills in. This is enhanced by our simulation manikins and VR suite, which provides a fun and engaging environment to learn in.

I have been a registered adult nurse for 30 years, with half of that time spent in an education role. My clinical background is varied having…
worked in clinical settings such as urology, breast and upper gastric surgery, renal unit (including transplantation) and colorectal surgery. For several years, I was a colorectal nurse specialist caring for patients who had undergone bowel surgery and stoma formation. I would care for them in the hospital but also support them in their homes. When I moved into education, I worked in primary care supporting registered nurses and health care support workers in their educational development, and from there went onto become the clinical educator for a community trust supporting a wide range of Health Care Professionals. I am also a registered teacher with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and have worked with the universities of Staffordshire and Chester leading projects on pre-registration student placements and clinical skills development in simulation environments. I am passionate about the delivery of high-quality health care and supporting health care professionals through effective training and education. I really enjoy being here at Telford College, where as a team we can offer a wide range of health care training and education in our bespoke simulation and virtual reality facilities.
“I would like to thank Telford College for giving me the opportunity to retrain — it has impacted my life in such a positive way. After losing my second wife, I felt I had nothing to live for. But with support, I stood strong and made a complete career change.
“From working as a self-employed plasterer for 36 years, with no steady income, I was able to become a professional driver with the security of a regular wage. It’s something I’d always wanted to have a go at, but never thought I could.”
“Our time on the course was excellent. The training was highly informative and gave us the confidence to take on new technologies and systems straight away. Since completing the course, we have successfully installed multiple PV systems to a high standard.
“Telford College played a significant role in our development within the industry and in helping us build the business we have today.”
“To begin with, our apprentice demonstrated an excellent ability to pick up a task and get straight to work. She was engaging with staff across our different offices, and self-managing her timetable and tasks in no time
The process of hiring an apprentice with Telford College was simple and easy to manage. After listing a job outline in July, we interviewed potential candidates suggested by the college. Our apprentice was selected and joined the team the following August.”
“We were originally contacted by the college; we discussed what we were looking for and what the college could do for us. We made use of the excellent talent pool of apprentice candidates the college has and, after interviewing a strong group, we hired our apprentice. I wish we could have taken them all!
We’re hoping to get more apprentices in next year and grow a really good training partnership with the college.”
