Students shine in creative writing competition

Creative writing competition winners 2026

Three talented Telford College students have been recognised for their outstanding storytelling skills after winning prizes in a creative writing competition.

Students were challenged to produce short stories inspired by the theme ‘We had a clear plan – what could go wrong?’ for the Urban Voices challenge.

The top prize of a £400 gift voucher went to Hiruni Kohilawatte Arachchige, with Jack Shingler receiving a £200 voucher as runner‑up, and Lea Zambo picking up a £100 voucher in third place.

The competition was judged by principal Lawrence Wood and vice principal Caroline Bastow, with winners’ friends and families invited into college for an official presentation ceremony.

Lecturers read short excerpts from each winning story before prizes were presented, donated by the Shropshire Jubilee Trust.

Competition organiser, English tutor Dana Sudworth praised the exceptionally high standard of entries and said the judging panel had thoroughly enjoyed reading all the students’ work.

Tutor Julia Paszek commented: “Our winner Hiruni joined the GCSE English course mid-way through the year and immediately blew me away with her analytical and evaluative skills.

“She has a real passion for exploring the intricacies of the English language and has truly found her voice in her written responses and essays. Her creative entry was incredibly sophisticated, especially considering it was produced under timed conditions.”

Julia highlighted Jack’s impressive development over recent months. “Jack has a real knack for creative writing,” she said.

“It’s clear from his classwork that he enjoys and takes pride in what he produces. He takes his time crafting thoughtful, engaging pieces and consistently delivers work of a very high standard.”

Tutor Freya Jones‑Smyth described third‑place winner Lea as a model student. “It came as no surprise to hear that Lea had been placed among the winning entries. She has a rare and unique creativity that shines through in everything she writes.”

The college said the competition had been a fantastic opportunity for students to express themselves, build confidence and celebrate their growing literary talents.
