Academic Life

We offer 25 different study pathways, with a growing range of A levels across STEM, Creative, Business, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Most of our students will take three A Levels over the course of two years… but we also offer some AAQ BTEC courses too.

New courses being added to the curriculum for the first year of Telford 6th include film studies, and medical science.

Some of our programmes offer combined pathways to suit different learning styles and university or career goals.

Telford 6th offers some options to mix vocational and A level subjects – these subjects are listed as ‘Extended Certificates’.

The Telford 6th Community

Telford College is a vibrant and inclusive community.

Modern facilities, social spaces, and dedicated study areas create the perfect environment to learn and grow.

In our new Telford 6th building, students will benefit from a range of enrichment activities including weekly sessions debating current affairs topics, state-of-the-art digital teaching equipment, a laptop loan service, high street coffee brands, and the opportunity to lead our own student council.

Most learning takes place in the classroom (or the laboratory if you study science), with engaging discussions and a chance to explore challenging concepts in depth.

You’ll have access to guest lectures and enrichment visits related to your subjects – so you can experience them in a real-life environment.

We also offer tutorial sessions designed to refuel your understanding, sharpen your thinking, and give you tailored support outside the classroom.

Beyond the classroom, our students enjoy clubs, enrichment activities, and events that build confidence and skills for life.

These include Duke of Edinburgh Awards programmes to university taster sessions, fact-finding field trips, and visits from expert guest lecturers.

Every learner at Telford 6th is supported to reach their full potential. Whether they’re aiming for top university placements, exploring career pathways, or simply striving to be the best, this is where the journey begins.

Culture, and Community Values

Our mission at Telford 6th is to deliver the highest quality of education and training for our communities.

As Telford & Wrekin’s largest sixth form centre, we recognise our responsibility to meet the needs of the community we serve – especially local and regional employers who rely on us to develop the highly capable workforce of the future.

We support every individual to achieve their highest possible outcome. We achieve this by working together to ensure that Telford College is a positive community which inspires action and success.

Our college values are Ambition, Respect, and Connection.

We aim high, embrace challenges, and strive to be our best.

We treat everyone with dignity, kindness and fairness – celebrating diversity and creating a safe, inclusive environment where all voices are valued.

A levels offer a rigorous foundation for success, but we believe they but are best tackled by those ready to think critically, work hard, and grow intellectually.

Entry Requirements

To attend Telford 6th, a student will need to achieve a minimum of five grade 9-4s at GCSE including English language and maths. Each individual A level subject carries its own entry criteria, and some subjects do require higher grades than this.

For individual subject entry requirements and course details, please look at the subject information pages.

Our lecturers will talk you through the entry requirements so you have a clear understanding of GCSE targets.

Due to the nature of the examination assessment method of A levels, we do not take level 2 equivalents as part of our entry criteria.

Early Help

We believe that education is a shared journey between students, their families, and our staff.

It is incredibly important to us that students and their families get the right support at the right time, whether that means academic guidance, wellbeing services, or practical advice.

We know that every young person’s path is unique, and by working closely with parents and carers, we ensure that challenges are addressed early and opportunities are maximised.

Our commitment is to provide clear communication, accessible resources, and a welcoming environment where families feel confident that their child is being supported every step of the way.

We also recognise that support extends beyond the classroom. From financial advice and careers guidance to counselling and safeguarding, our teams are here to help families navigate the wider aspects of college life.

By offering timely interventions and open channels of communication, we aim to build strong partnerships that empower students to thrive both academically and personally.

Telford College offers a wide range of its own Early Help services including:

  • A comprehensive, student focussed, personal development programme.
  • A full and robust tutorial programme, including statutory safeguarding topics.
  • Counselling on campus by a trained and qualified counsellor.
  • Access to external safeguarding groups to deliver engaging information sessions.
  • Access to free period products to combat period poverty.
  • Access to free breakfast and meal deals to support those who do not meet the threshold for bursary support.

Trips and Visits

The ability to bring A level subjects to life is really important to us at Telford 6th, and we are proud of the opportunities we provide to our students outside the classroom.

Recent trips and visits have included a four-day residential to Dorset for geology students, a two-day residential for geography students to Liverpool, frequent visits to the Houses of Parliament, and visits to Chester Zoo.

History students have the opportunity to visit Auschwitz, and all students get the chance to attend a range of universities including Oxford and Cambridge, plus Keele, BCU, the University of Birmingham, Staffordshire University and more.

Independent Study

Research suggests that students who perform best are those who commit to at least 5 hours of study per week, per subject.

Ideally this should not all take place in one sitting…  independent study should be set in a manner where it can be spread across a working week.

It is our aim to gradually build and embed the necessary skills needed for students to be able to do this independently by the time they reach their second year of study.

Students will be set work in most lessons that is to be completed in independent study time.

This work should be completed as addition to ongoing revision materials. Work can be completed at home or in our various study areas, but should always be completed for the deadlines set.
