An Autocare Technician carries out a range of services and repairs to cars, vans and light goods vehicles, and requires a unique combination of technical, retail and customer service skills. They will use a range of tools, measuring and diagnostic equipment to identify and repair simple system faults. An Autocare Technician has to demonstrate expertise not only in the technical elements of their role but also a good grasp of the practical and theoretical aspects of vehicle systems.

Health and safety in the workplace including equipment maintenance. Carry out stock procedures. Carry out vehicle safety inspections and routine maintenance. Make recommendations to customers based on the results of inspections, ensuring that sales recommendations are accurate and fully costed, are ethical and in the best interests of the customer at all times. Carry out replacement/repair and balancing of a range of light vehicle tyres. Carry out the replacement of components on a specific range of vehicle systems. Carry out 4-wheel Geometry operations. Use a range of specialist tools & equipment, mechanical & electrical measuring tools and diagnostic equipment to support fault identification and repair. Identify & procure correct parts to meet specific customer requirements. Access vehicle technical data to inform inspections and make judgements on wear and serviceability. Deal with and resolve low-level customer complaints. Communicate effectively with customers, suppliers and colleagues.  Use specific company IT systems within the workplace.

In the last 3 months of the apprenticeship, the apprentice must take part in an End Point Assessment, consisting of a knowledge test, practical observations and a professional review (supported by a portfolio)

The End-Point Assessment must have independence and successful completion will lead to final certification of the apprenticeship and demonstrate that the apprentice is fully competent and can work safely and confidently as an Autocare Technician.
Many apprentices remain employed with the company and may further develop their skills by starting a level 3 Light Vehicle Maintenance qualification.
Individual employers will set the selection criteria for the applicant. It is recommended during the selection process that the learner demonstrates the following qualities:

Interested in motor vehicles
General analytical and mechanical skills
Research and problem solving skills
Organised, methodical and good attention to detail
Good communication skills, both oral and written
Works as part of a team to deliver excellent service

Apprentices must hold at least a GCSE grade 1 or equivalent in English and maths and will be required to work towards Level 2 Functional Skills as part of their apprenticeship. Apprentices aged 19 and over may opt out of this requirement but need to ensure suitable working levels within both English and Maths.
