Kian and Eathen are building solid career foundations

Two Telford College construction students have been praised for their talent and professionalism as they build the skills needed for successful careers in the industry.

Kian Rutter and Eathan Hallard say they are thoroughly enjoying the hands‑on learning in the construction centre at the college’s Wellington campus.

Kian, a former Telford Langley School student who lives in Dawley, is nearing the end of his second year on a Level 2 bricklaying course and hopes to progress onto an apprenticeship.

He said: “The course has been great. It’s really helped me to understand what I want to do in my career. I’m not a classroom learner – I always prefer hands‑on tasks where I can really put my mind to the job.

“I’ve enjoyed being given the opportunity to find solutions to problems with bricklaying, particularly around cavity wall work.”

Eathan, 17, a former Thomas Telford School student, is looking to join his father’s groundworks business when he completes his studies. He is approaching the end of his Level 1 bricklaying course and is also hoping to move onto an apprenticeship.

He said: “I want to take on a high role in my dad’s business and help it grow into a larger company. A couple of weeks ago I completed a wall for one of my dad’s customers, and they were very pleased with it.

“I believe that completing this course at Telford College, and moving onto an apprenticeship in September, will be excellent preparation for getting me used to the atmosphere of being on site.”

Tutor Stephen O’Donoghue said: “Kian has been with us for the last two years on the Level 2 Bricklaying course and he’s been a really solid student throughout. He produces high‑quality practical work and takes a lot of pride in what he does.

“Over his time here he has built up a strong portfolio that shows the standard of his work. He’s hoping to move into an apprenticeship next, and with the effort and attitude he has shown, I am confident he will do well in the trade.”

He added: “Eathan is a dedicated and highly talented Level 1 bricklaying student who has consistently produced outstanding work throughout his course.

“His professionalism, strong work ethic, and commitment to achieving high standards have made him stand out amongst his peers. Eathan takes great pride in his practical work and continues to show excellent potential within the construction industry.”
