Environmental science is a contemporary and engaging A level that explores the relationship between people and the natural world. Combining elements of biology, chemistry, geography, and physics, the course develops a scientific understanding of current global issues such as climate change, resource management, pollution, and sustainability.

Students are encouraged to think critically, analyse real-world data, and undertake practical and fieldwork investigations that bring learning to life. The subject develops highly transferable skills, including problem solving, independent research, and informed decision-making.

Environmental science provides excellent preparation for university study and a wide range of careers in environmental management, conservation, sustainability, science, geography, and related fields. It is an ideal choice for students who are curious about the world and motivated to understand and protect it.

In year 1, environmental science A level introduces students to key environmental themes shaping the modern world. Topics include ecosystems and biodiversity, climate and earth systems, energy resources, pollution, and sustainability. Students also develop practical and data-analysis skills, building a strong foundation for university study and environmental careers.

In year 2, the course builds on core knowledge learned in the first year to explore complex environmental challenges in greater depth. Students study topics such as global climate change, environmental policy and management, resource security, and sustainable development. Greater emphasis is placed on evaluation, data analysis, and independent thinking, fully preparing students for university level study and careers in environmental and sustainability fields.
Higher education, apprenticeships and employment.

Typical careers for people studying environmental science include environmental consultant, environmental education officer, nature conservation officer, environmental engineer, sustainability consultant, water quality scientist, environmental health practitioner, landscape architect, town planner and toxicologist.
5 GCSEs at grades 9-4, including English language, maths (at a minimum of grade 5) and science (at a minimum of grade 5).
The course is assessed through two written examinations at the end of the course. Students sit paper 1 and paper 2, each 3 hours long and worth 50% of the final grade. The exams assess knowledge across the whole specification using a range of question
One highlight of studying this course is the extensive fieldwork experience. Students complete four full days of compulsory fieldwork, applying classroom learning to real environmental settings such as rivers, urban areas, and ecosystems. As well as the hands on data collection which develops confidence using scientific equipment and techniques, including sampling methods, environmental monitoring, and risk assessment.
