‘Wonderful opportunity’ for music student Rory

Rory Black is collaborating with Guy Chambers

A Telford College music student is being mentored and supported by one of the UK’s most successful songwriters and music producers.

Guy Chambers – best known for his long creative partnership with Robbie Williams as well as hit collaborations with Kylie Minogue, Tina Turner, Scissor Sisters, Tom Jones, Diana Ross, Busted and Mark Ronson – has identified Rory Black as a potential star of the future.

Rory is currently in the second year of a level three music course at Telford College’s Wellington campus. He came to Guy’s attention after entering – and winning – a songwriting competition held at The Hub at St Mary’s in Lichfield.

As part of his prize, Rory got to perform his winning song ‘Know My Name’ live on stage, accompanied by Guy on piano.

He has since been invited to a recording session at the producer’s world-famous Sleeper Sounds Studio in London later this year, as well as getting chance to perform at an exclusive concert in the city to an audience of music industry executives.

Rory, who turned 18 last month, said: “It was a surreal experience to share the stage with someone who has significantly impacted the music landscape.

“At the end of the night I went to get one of Guy’s CDs signed, but instead of that he gave me his phone number. The next day we were meeting over breakfast, and he started giving me advice, and mentoring me.

“I’d been writing a song which I sent to him, and he gave me ideas on how I could improve it, and also helped me write some of the verses. So I suppose you could say we have collaborated on it.

Rory, from Cannock, said: “I’m so grateful that someone of his experience wants to take the time to help me. When I sit and think about everything that has happened over these past few weeks it gets really exciting.

“My songs aim to communicate a personal message, and having the chance to play live with a professional like Guy was an unforgettable milestone. I encourage fellow songwriters and musicians to seize opportunities, as you never know where they might lead.”

Guy Chambers is best known for his work with Robbie Williams, co-writing some of the former Take That man’s most iconic hits including ‘Angels’, ‘Millennium’, ‘Feel’, ‘Let Me Entertain You’ and ‘Rock DJ’.

He took to social media to praise Rory’s work, saying: “I don’t come across this level of talent very often. He may be at the very beginning of his journey, but his song ‘Know My Name’ was pretty much perfect. He plays guitar beautifully and sings like a bird.”

Johnathan Abbott, learner manager for creative and music at Telford College, said: “This is an amazing opportunity for Rory. Guy’s work has earned him multiple honours, including three BRIT Awards and three Ivor Novello Awards.

“To have someone of his calibre recognise Rory’s talent is a huge endorsement — and a testament to the hard work, creativity and ambition Rory shows every day on his music course here at Telford College.”

Rory says he is thoroughly enjoying his time at Telford College. He originally enrolled at a college in Birmingham, but made the switch after visiting the Wellington campus during an open event.

“I really liked what I saw of the facilities, and the people, and called straight away to see if they could fit me on the course. The college is very welcoming, the music facilities are really good, and the lecturers are supportive and knowledgeable.”

Telford College music lecturers Ben Fitzharris and Jared Jackson said they were thoroughly enjoying working with Rory, and helping him to capitalise on the ‘wonderful opportunity’ he has been given.
