Jake Wakeman is gearing up for a new career as an HGV driver after enrolling on one of Telford College’s free short training courses.
He signed up for the college’s classroom‑based programme, which provides the skills and qualifications needed to obtain a Class 2, Category C HGV licence and take the first steps into the sector.
Jake, who lives in Birmingham, has a background in retail management and spent the past four years working as a health and safety adviser before being made redundant.
“I’ve always been around transport, so driving an HGV is something that really interests me,” he said.
“I was exploring all the avenues available after being made redundant, and came across this Telford College course while searching online. I couldn’t believe it when I found out it was free for people in my situation who were out of work.”

The course is delivered by Telford College tutors in partnership with GTG Training in Wolverhampton.
“It’s been a really interesting and eye‑opening course,” Jake said. “It’s 22 years since I passed my driving test, and even longer since I last sat in a classroom. But the beauty of this is that anyone can do it – it doesn’t matter what your background is.
“Having two weeks in a classroom works perfectly for me. I could never have focused on this course at home. This is a massive opportunity, and I’m really grateful for it. I can’t wait to get out on the road.”
