Telford College welcomed Year 11 students from Burton Borough School in Newport for a dynamic ‘Your Future’ careers conference, packed with workshops, employer interviews and confidence‑building activities.

The event gave students the chance to explore the Wellington campus and take part in a series of one‑to‑one interviews with local employers, designed to help them prepare for their next steps.

Burton Borough careers lead Vicki Hughes said: “It was a brilliant day of learning, confidence building and opportunity for our students.

“It was wonderful to see Year 11 engage so positively with the workshops, employers and interview experiences, helping them prepare with growing confidence for their future pathways.

“Thank you to all the supporters, employers and facilitators who gave their time and helped make this event such a positive and inspiring experience.”

Burton Borough principal Caroline Bedford described the conference as ‘a positive and inspiring experience’ for the students.

“We are grateful to all the employers, facilitators and supporters who helped make it such a valuable day. Their encouragement, time and dedication helped create a truly special experience for our Year 11 visitors,” she said.

Students took part in a wide range of career‑focused sessions, including interview skills with John Ogden from Capgemini, revision and study strategies with Exam Study Expert, CV writing and personal branding with David Hyner, and team‑building activities with the NSCG team.

William Wadsworth from Exam Study Expert praised the ‘flawless focus and engagement’ of students during the revision and study skills workshop.

Newport’s deputy mayor Bill Harper added: “I was humbled by the students’ dedication and professionalism. I would encourage them all to continue their great efforts and embrace the opportunities and successes which they are clearly destined for.”

Michelle Patterson from Army Careers described the students as “exceptional, so grounded and a delight to interview”.

And former Burton Borough vice chair of governors Mark Austin said: “All the students I met with and interviewed were a credit to themselves and the school. They displayed maturity, politeness and courtesy, engagement, honesty and a high level of self‑reflection.”
