Automotive students from Telford College are preparing to go ‘Krazy’ this weekend when they take part in a big charity fundraising event.

Krazy Races arrives in Telford Town Park on July 12 for a spectacular day of free high-energy racing, creativity and family-friendly fun.

The soapbox derby will see 26 teams take on a thrilling downhill course in handmade karts – and with the weather set fair for the weekend, organisers are hoping for big crowds.

Telford College automotive students are competing as ‘Soapy Grease Monkeys’ and have been working since March on building a bathtub on wheels, complete with bubble-making machines and a shower head.

Automotive tutor Robert Hands, who will be driving the kart, said: “The automotive level three team have put a great kart together with some brilliant ideas to make it functional and funny. My favourite part is the exhaust which is made from bubble machines.

“I hope my driving can do justice to how great it looks, and that I can do them proud. But no matter what, it’s been a great team effort.”

Krazy Races is of the UK’s largest touring soapbox events, bringing together businesses, community groups and charities to design, build and race unique karts, while delivering a fun-packed day of entertainment, food and activities for all ages.

There are a variety of prizes on offer at the Telford event, including best dressed, best design, and fastest kart.

This year’s event will support the Lingen Davies Sunflower Appeal, which aims to raise £5 million to develop a dedicated cancer treatment centre at Princess Royal Hospital in Telford, helping more people access care closer to home.

Sarah Belcher, founder of Krazy Races, said: “Being local to the Telford area, it’s a real honour to be bringing Krazy Races here for the first time.”
