Three Telford College students have received bursaries from Wellington Rotary Club to help fund the next stage of their education.

Hannah Turner, Oliver Bassett and Helena Biffin have been awarded a total of £2,100 through the club’s Higher Education Bursary scheme, and visited a club meeting to thank members.

The club gives out bursaries each year to help young people towards their higher education and invites them to fill in applications. Shortlisted candidates are then invited to take part in an interview to explain in more detail about how they would use the money.

Among this year’s many applications, Rotary Club officials said three Telford College students truly stood out – all with inspiring ambitions and clear plans for the future. Each has been given a £700 bursary.

Hannah, from Shifnal, has secured a place at Aberystwyth University to study psychology, after completing A levels in criminology, psychology and sociology. She plans to buy a laptop to help support her studies and research.

Oliver, from Ketley Bank, has an offer to study film and television production at the University of York after completing her creative media course at Telford College.

He says he will use the money to help fund camera and filming equipment. “It will allow me to go out in my own time and record short films, as well as building up my portfolio of photography.”

And Helena, from Madeley, is going to Nottingham Trent University to study health and social care after completing A levels in philosophy and religion, psychology and sociology.  She says the bursary will allow her to buy a laptop to help with note taking and essay writing.

“We hope this support provides them with greater opportunities, confidence and encouragement as they take the next steps towards their future.”

Channelle Nixon, director of safeguarding and student experience at Telford College, said: ”The Rotary Club is a really important partner for us.

“As well as the bursary opportunities, it’s a way for students to access support within the community, and provides collaboration opportunities around community support – getting to know people and organisations locally.”
