A Telford College student is preparing for the trip of a lifetime after being selected to officiate at one of the world’s biggest school sport football tournaments.
Callum Oram, who is studying policing at the college’s Wellington campus, has been chosen as one of the referees for the prestigious International School Sport Federation Football World Cup, taking place in China from October 17‑26.
The global event brings together boys’ and girls’ teams from across every continent, with matches staged at three major venues throughout the city after a glitzy opening ceremony.
Callum, 17, has been selected to join an international team of referees from around the world, working together to officiate fixtures in the city of Suzhou. It marks a significant milestone in his refereeing journey – and a proud moment for Telford College.
Callum, a former Telford Park School student who has been refereeing for around three years, said he was ‘honoured and excited’ to have been called up.
“It’s an incredible opportunity. To be invited to referee at a world‑level tournament, doing what I love to do, is an amazing opportunity for me.
“I’m really looking forward to representing Telford College, meeting officials from other countries, and learning from the experience. I’d really like to develop my refereeing to the point where I can turn it into a career.”
Callum, who has already officiated at the English Schools FA finals held at Worcester City’s stadium, said the China trip would give him valuable exposure to different playing styles, refereeing standards and cultural approaches to the game.
“Being part of an international refereeing team will help me grow massively, both personally and professionally. Being a good referee requires excellent communication skills, discipline, organisation and confidence, as well as a high level of fitness.”
Melanie Newbrook, learner manager for sport and public uniformed services at Telford College, said: “We are all incredibly proud of Callum. This selection is a testament to his hard work and the maturity he brings to his refereeing.
“Opportunities like this don’t come around often, and he thoroughly deserves it. It’s wonderful to see our students gaining international experience and showcasing their talents on a global stage.”
The ISF Football World Cup is recognised as one of the organisation’s flagship events, designed to promote international friendship, sporting excellence and cultural exchange among young people.
