New refresher courses for HGV drivers

Telford College is launching a new programme of refresher courses to help HGV drivers maintain their qualifications and stay compliant with industry best practice.

The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) is a legal requirement for anyone who is operating a heavy goods vehicle or large goods vehicle professionally in the UK.

All drivers must complete at least 35 hours of training every five years to retain their Driver CPC card.

Telford College will be offering a flexible new CPC refresher programme from the start of February, giving drivers the option to complete their training over a single week or spread it across a longer period to fit around work and personal commitments.

The courses will be delivered at a range of locations across the West Midlands by Peter Presland, who has more than 20 years’ experience in the logistics sector and has been a member of the Telford College team since 2019.

He said: “CPC refresher courses give drivers the opportunity to update their knowledge, reinforce safe working habits, and ensure they remain compliant and confident on the road.

“Many experienced drivers have been in the industry for years, but even the most skilled professionals benefit from regular training. These courses provide a valuable chance to refresh existing knowledge, learn about industry developments, and share experiences with fellow drivers.”

Jon Aver, from the college’s employer engagement team, said: “Employers are looking for drivers who are not only qualified, but committed to continuous professional development.

“CPC training helps individuals enhance their skills, maintain high standards and demonstrate their professionalism to current and future employers.

“Our CPC courses are designed to be practical, engaging and relevant to the challenges drivers face every day.”

Telford College is also planning to expand the programme in the coming months to include Passenger Carrying Vehicle (PCV) training for bus and coach drivers.
