Human resources advisor Emma Baugh is thriving in her role at PCB Solicitors after completing an HR apprenticeship with Telford College.
Emma applied for her apprenticeship at the college after completing A levels at Idsall School in Shifnal – and is now looking to take on an apprentice of her own.
“I was never really interested in university,” says Emma. “The idea of working, studying, and having that flexibility was much more appealing.
“I reached out to the college and they set me up with a profile. They shared my CV with local companies and I got an interview at Terry Jones Solicitors, based in Stafford Park.
“When I started, the HR team was small, so I did a bit of everything, shadowing admin tasks like letters and onboarding.
“As the company grew, I took on more advanced work like TUPE transfers and employee engagement. I even worked across different offices and gained experience in learning and development. It was varied, intense, but a great experience. Having my colleagues and regular tutor support kept me focused.”
She also enrolled on a Level 3 CIPD course outside of work, which she said really helped her to complete her apprenticeship. Emma has now moved to PCB Solicitors, joining the company’s Shrewsbury office.
“I was moving to a smaller company than the one I was previously at. The biggest change I faced was that it was just me in the HR department! It was a bit daunting at first, but I really embraced the challenge.
“I enjoy the personal touch here, building one-to-one relationships, and being valued rather than just a number. The role perfectly matches what I was looking for, and the team has been fantastic.”
Emma has since completed a level 5 diploma in people management, and is looking to expand her team with an apprentice of her own.
“That will be a learning curve for me as well, but it’s much needed. There’s plenty of work here to keep someone busy.”
“Apprenticeships aren’t necessarily easier than degrees; you need to be highly organised, resilient, and genuinely interested in working with people. Research the field, network with others, and never hesitate to ask questions; it’s the best way to learn.”
