Former Telford College student Ben Willetts returned to one of his old classes to discuss life at Warwick University, what he enjoys about his studies, and his future plans.
Ben first heard about Telford College while attending an assembly at his former school, Haberdashers’ Abraham Darby, where he studied maths, further maths, chemistry, and physics as A level subjects.
“I wanted to go to a college instead of staying at a sixth form,” says Ben. “I saw what the college had to offer and thought it was the best option around. I came in for my interview and spoke to the maths tutor, who was really passionate and sold it to me.”
“I really enjoyed studying physics, I’ve got to say. I liked all my A levels. I took four, so of course I had quite a big workload!”
“I genuinely loved my time at Telford College. I found the whole experience really enjoyable and fulfilling. The environment allowed me to grow academically and personally, and I felt much more prepared for future opportunities.”
After studying at the college, Ben went on to study physics at Warwick University, his first choice.
“When I first visited the university, I was immediately impressed by the campus, it felt fresh and exciting. The facilities and atmosphere gave me a sense of opportunity and growth.
“I’ve really enjoyed the course. It’s been great. I like the freedom of university, you’re left to your own devices to expand your knowledge.”
“My goal is to work in the nuclear industry because I find the field fascinating and full of potential. After graduating, I plan to apply for graduate schemes, including a major program called Nuclear Graduates. I don’t have a specific dream job in mind; I simply enjoy the area and want to contribute to its development.”
When asked what important advice he would give to current A level students, Ben says it’s important to take ownership of your own learning. “Transitioning from secondary school can make it tempting to fall behind, but consistency is key. I learned that success comes when you commit to your goals and keep pushing forward. Stay focused, stay proactive, and make every effort count.”
