Telford College tutors are stepping back into real‑world workplaces to ensure they are up to date with the latest developments in the business community.
The college’s ‘Back To Industry’ initiative is designed to strengthen long‑standing partnerships with employers, and ensure that teaching staff remain fully informed on emerging technologies, modern practices and the evolving expectations of industry.
Sarah Davies, executive director of employer engagement and partnerships, said: “Employers tell us they want people who are confident, adaptable and familiar with the realities of modern workplaces.
“By giving our tutors the chance to reconnect with industry first-hand, we’re strengthening that link and making sure our curriculum continues to reflect current practice.
“Whether it’s new machinery, digital workflows, sustainability requirements or updated regulations, these placements help our staff to stay on top of all the latest developments in our local economy.
“It means our students benefit from teaching that is informed, relevant and aligned with what employers need right now.”
She thanked the companies which have given time to support the programme, including Telford-based automated technology firm iconsys, and driver training specialist A1.
Milissa Chesters, head of people and culture at iconsys, said: “We are passionate about strengthening the connection between education and industry, and initiatives such as this provide a valuable opportunity to share current industry practices, emerging technologies and real-world business challenges.
“By supporting lecturers to gain first-hand experience of today’s workplace, we can help ensure students are developing the skills, knowledge and behaviours that employers need both now and in the future.”
Digital lecturer Elisabet Basford spent a day with iconsys IT team members Luke Evans and Sean Rendell and , and Milissa said: “The day was extremely valuable and provided an excellent opportunity for collaboration and knowledge sharing.”
Elisabet (pictured during her time at iconsys) added: “I had an amazing day with iconsys. Luke and Sean are so knowledgeable and their tenacity and knowledge was really inspiring.
“It reinforced that great solutions aren’t just built with technology, but with curiosity, problem-solving, and the confidence to take initiative. Thanks to Telford College for recognising the importance of maintaining our skills by supporting this initiative.”
Sam Longman, of A1 Training, said: “It’s important that tutors are equipped with the most up-to-date industry knowledge possible so they can pass that on to their students.
“We employ several former Telford College students, and the more industry awareness and understanding they have before joining us, the smoother their transition from education into employment becomes.”
Tutor Arran Chillington spent time with the company’s haulage and Pallet Track departments, and Sam said: “It was a fantastic opportunity to share practical industry knowledge and experiences.”
Arran said: “It was an interesting and beneficial experience, as it allowed me to see industry challenges from an employer’s perspective. Discussions with the company highlighted how current events and industry-specific issues are impacting their operations and workforce.
“This experience has enhanced my knowledge of current industry trends and will enable me to provide students with up-to-date, real-world examples and advice, helping them better prepare for employment and understand employer expectations.”
